Natural Support For Ear Infections
I have udated this post from 3 years ago as I’ve learnt more in the holistic health space in that time and wanted to share some other important tools and techniques for you to use. Ear infections are one of the most common reasons children present to their doctors and what parents often don’t know is that 80% of ear infections will SELF resolve! We support the child and the body does what it’s best at, healing itself!
I recall a profound conversation I had with an integrative paediatrician last year who told me that in her experience talking to other clinicians, doctors are far more likely to offer antibiotics if they think the PARENT wants them!!! In the case of ear infections, I encourage you to ask your doctor “are these necessary?” because evidence shows us that in 80% of cases (uncomplicated AOM, over 6 months of age and not immunocompromised) they are NOT needed!
Hope this post gives you more confidence in this area Mamas ❤️❤️
types of ear infections
The two types of ear infections often seen in children are middle ear infections (otitis media) and outer ear infections (otitis externa). Most ear infections involve the middle ear.
Middle ear infections occur when bacteria or viruses travel up the Eustachian tube, which connects the space behind the ear drum to the back of the nose. The Eustachian tubes get blocked because of swelling and infected fluid (pus), which spreads into the middle ear and puts pressure on the eardrum, which bulges and causes pain. Acute otitis media (AOM) is one of the most common infections in childhood.
why do kids get ear infections more than adults?
A child's Eustachian tubes are smaller, shorter and flatter (more horizontal) than adults. This makes it easier for bacteria and viruses to enter them and for the tubes to become blocked.
Adenoid tissue (a patch of tissue that sit in the back of the nasal cavity which helps trap harmful bacteria and viruses inhaled or swallowed) may also contribute to bacteria being able to enter the Eustachian tube.
a note on antibiotics
Ear infections usually do not need treatment with antibiotics.
After one week, at least 3 out of 4 children will be better whether they take antibiotics or not. PMC116668
Most cases of AOM in children resolve spontaneously and so 'Watchful waiting' in non-severe AOM is now considered standard practice and means withholding antibiotics and observing the child for clinical improvement.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Antibiotics are often given is under 6 months of age, immunocompromised and other high risk groups, and are considered if the child's infection worsens or fails to improve within 48 hours.
Decongestants, antihistamines and corticosteroids are not effective in AOM and have not been shown to provide additional therapeutic benefit.
